  Based on the Yiddish folk tales by Sholem Aleichem that inspired Fiddler on the Roof, Tevye is a story of the clash between modernity, parental authority and love, customs and enlightenment. Restored in Yiddish with English subtitles, Tevye was the first non-English language film deemed "culturally significant" by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.
