“Regarding Susan Sontag” is an intimate and nuanced investigation into the life of one of the most influential and provocative thinkers of the 20th century. Passionate and gracefully outspoken throughout her career, Susan Sontag became one of the most important literary, political and feminist icons of her generation. The documentary explores Sontag’s life through evocative experimental images, archival materials, accounts from friends, family, colleagues, and lovers, as well as her own words, read by actress Patricia Clarkson. From her early infatuation with books and her first experience in a gay bar; from her marriage in adolescence to her last lover, “Regarding Susan Sontag” is a fascinating look at a towering cultural critic and writer whose works on photography, war, illness, and terrorism still resonate today.
New York Triptych has been made possible by Festival Angel Marlene Meyerson. "Regarding Susan Sontag" has been underwritten by Marlene and Gene Frank.

“Sukkah City” was the brainchild of best-selling author Joshua Foer and Reboot founder Roger Bennett. Foer asked, what if contemporary architects and designers were challenged to design and construct twelve radical sukkahs? And so was born the design competition and exhibition known as “Sukkah City.”The film tracks the competition from jury day, as an all-star cast of architects, academics and critics (Thom Mayne, Paul Goldberger, Ron Arad) debate the merits of the 600 submissions; to the construction, installation and exhibition of the twelve winning structures in Union Square in the heart of New York City; and the critical and popular response of some of the 200,000 New Yorkers who attended the two-day exhibition.
New York Triptych has been made possible by Festival Angel Marlene Meyerson. "Sukkah City" has been underwritten by Baksim Goddard.

Doc Pomus” brings to life Doc’s joyous, romantic, heartbreaking, and extraordinarily eventful journey.

The film that beat "Star Wars" to the Oscar. The movie that represented Woody Allen's coming of age as a film-maker. The cultural phenomenon that spurred women all across America to raid charity shops for waistcoats and kipper ties. Many things mark "Annie Hall's" place in cinema history, but none of them are the reason you should see this movie. That would be the humour, poignancy and acute observation contained in each and every frame. It's also the most exuberant of his movies, thrumming with ideas and experimental technical flourishes. Colour schemes, split-screens, animation, subtitles, straight-to-camera confessions: they're all here, along with the one-liners, neuroses, cultural referencing, psychiatric nit-picking and love of New York that havenow become the director's trademarks. Playing a Broadway producer of flops who survives (barely) by suckering little old ladies, he teams with an emotionally retarded accountant portrayed by Gene Wilder in a scheme to produce a flop. By selling 25,000% of production, they figure to be rich when it flops. For the twist, the musical comedy Springtime for Hitler, penned by a shell-shocked Nazi, is a smash. The film is unmatched in the scenes featuring Mostel and Wilder alone together, and several episodes with other actors are truly rare. When the producers approach the most atrocious director on Broadway, they find Christopher Hewett in drag exchanging catty comments with his secretary (Andreas Voutsinas). Estelle Winwood is a winner as a salacious little old lady, and Kenneth Mars has his moments as the Nazi scripter. Variety

Boundaries separating the natural from the supernatural dissolve as ill-fated pledges, unfulfilled passions and untimely deaths ensnare two families in a tragic labyrinth of spiritual possession. The film was made on location in Poland in 1937 and brought together the best talents of Polish Jewry, script writers, composers, choreographers, set designers, actors and historical advisors. The film's exquisite musical and dance interludes evoke the cultural richness of both shtetl communities and Polish Jewry on the eve of World War II."The Dybbuk" is part of our new Cinema Salon series which is a selection of films with accompanying talks and discussions to allow for a deeper exploration.

"The Farewell Party" is a unique, compassionate dark comedy about a group of friends at a Jerusalem retirement home who build a machine for self-euthanasia in order to help their terminally ill friend. When rumors of the machine begin to spread, more and more people ask for their help, and the friends are faced with a life and death dilemma. At its heart, the film is about separation, separation from someone you love, separation from yourself - when the mind begins to fail, and the separation from life and the right to choose how it all ends. Premiering this past year at the Venice International Film Festival where it won the People's Choice Award,"The Farewell Party" made its North American bow last fall at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival. Its cast includes a roster of top Israeli actors including Aliza Rosen, best known to American audiences for her role in "Footnote". "The Farewell Party" went on to garner 14 nominations for Israeli Academy Awards, snagging four wins including Best Actor. Filmed in the U.S., Israel and the United Kingdom, "Above and Beyond" brings together new interviews with the pilots, as well as stunning aerial footage, to present a fascinating tale filled with heart, heroism and high-flying chutzpah. Film noir may have the look and feel of an American film genre, but many of its directors were émigrés from Europe in the 1920s or refugees fleeing Hitler in the 1930s. Not surprisingly, many were also Jewish. Often speaking little English, they brought experiences as strangers in a strange land and an aesthetic that informed their work. “Stars in the Dark: Émigrés, Exiles and Film Noir” is a week long tribute to these filmmakers and artists, looking at the lives they left behind, the ones they created, and the films they made. Presented by the Santa Fe Jewish Film Festival, the tribute runs from May 24 - 31. In addition to a selection of films from directors such as Fritz Lang, Billy Wilder, and Robert Siodmak, “Stars in the Dark” highlights include:
  • International cabaret artist Adrienne Haan performing in “Between Fire and Ice”, a show of authentic Berlin “Kabarett” music, a co-presentation with Performance Santa Fe.
  • Award-winning screenwriter Kirk Ellis presenting Fritz Lang’s German Expressionist film masterpiece, M, a forerunner of film noir.
  • Diane Armitage, Adjunct Lecturer of Art History at the Santa Fe Community College, speaking about German Expressionism in art and its connection to film noir.
  • Steven Ovitsky, Executive Director of Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, speaking about the refugee composers who came to Hollywood and wrote scores for noir films.
To create the feel of the period, C.G. Higgins is creating a special “Café Noir” menu of selected pastries that might have been served in the salons and cafés of Europe in the 1920s and ‘30s.

Willkommen! Authentic Berlin Kabarett is coming to Santa Fe with international cabaret artist Adrienne Haan performing “Between Fire and Ice”. This co-presentation by Performance Santa Fe and the Santa Fe Jewish Film Festival recreates the cabaret scene of Weimar Berlin in the 1920s, a time between two World Wars when artistic experimentation exploded. PS 100 rgbOriginal cabaret music was satirical, powerful and full of wit, warning of the dangers in the rise of Nationalism. In “Between Fire and Ice”, Ms. Haan relives this period of creativity, gay liberation, the feminist struggle, and more, with a voice that Le Monde has described as “second to none”. The music of cabaret composers such as Frederich Hollaender and Mischa Spoliansky, names unfamiliar to most American audiences, along with that of Kurt Weill/Bertolt Brecht come to life in songs filled with cynicism and irony.

Meet Adrienne Haan

Equally at home on large concert stages and intimate cabaret rooms, Ms. Haan has performed with the Cologne Philharmonic, Frankfurt Symphony, WDR Symphony, and the Jerusalem Symphony, among others. As cultural ambassador, she has made appearances at the German and Luxembourg Embassies in Washington DC and the German Consulate in New York. This fall she makes her debut at Carnegie Hall.
